49ers ask Smith for pay cut

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that the 49ers have asked quarterback Alex Smith to take a pay cut to help free up some salary-cap room.

“For us to ask him to restructure, that’s kind of a shot,” general manager Scot McCloughan said of Smith, who is currently on his honeymoon and not in contact with the team. “He is under contract for two more years and for us to ask him to take a paycut … it’s kind of a blow to the ego.”
