Time for defensive coordinators to shine

Fans will focus on Baltimore and Tennessee’s defenses. Other teams will focus on Baltimore and Tennessee’s defensive coordinators.

The St. Louis Rams and New York Jets are interested in interviewing Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan for their vacant head-coaching jobs. Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz already has interviewed with the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions.

Few leaks in Chiefs’ GM search

Kudos to Kansas City Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt, who has conducted one of the quietest general manager searches the NFL has seen.

Denver narrows list of head-coaching candidates

At this time last week, in this space, it was suggested that New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was the leading candidate for the Broncos’ head-coaching job. The point is still valid, only now it’s stronger.

Cards’ Warner cashing in on incentives

When Arizona plays at Carolina on Saturday, it’s the $1 million game for Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner.

Cards would benefit from letting James go

Arizona’s next loss, whether it’s today against Carolina or later in the postseason, is expected to be running back Edgerrin James‘ final game in a Cardinals uniform.

Will Williams toughen up defense in the Big Easy?

Now that Gregg Williams will not return to Jacksonville as the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator, he’s trying to figure out where he will be next season.

The favorite is the Saints, who met with Williams last week. After Williams visited the Saints, he traveled to Green Bay to meet with the Packers over their defensive coordinator job.

Picking a QB in first round usually pays off

It’s a quarterback-driven league. We’re reminded of it again and again. And the quarterbacks still standing validate it.

Look at the eight remaining teams and eight remaining quarterbacks: Arizona’s Kurt Warner, Baltimore’s Joe Flacco, Carolina’s Jake Delhomme, the New York Giants’ Eli Manning, Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb, Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger, San Diego’s Philip Rivers and Tennessee’s Kerry Collins.

Cards’ Boldin expected to play vs. Panthers

Two Cardinals sources told NFL Network’s Scott Hanson that WR Anquan Boldin is expected to be active Saturday and will attempt to play with his strained left hamstring. Boldin took part in the team’s final walk-through Friday in Charlotte, N.C.

Top five fantasy running backs for 2009

With the fantasy football season over (unless you signed up for our Playoff Challenge, of course), it’s time to start looking ahead to 2009.

I’ll be working on a complete list of player rankings over the next several weeks, but for now, I’ll offer up the top five players per position over the next few days.

Giants staying healthy entering divisional round

For the third straight day, LB Zak DeOssie (back) and DE Justin Tuck (lower leg, knee) were the only players listed on New York’s injury report Friday, and both are probable for Sunday’s NFC Divisional Playoff Game against the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles. DeOssie and Tuck were limited in practice Friday, as they were Thursday.

Chargers’ Tomlinson doubtful with groin injury

As Saturday’s Chargers-Steelers matchup nears, it appears LaDainian Tomlinson‘s groin injury will not allow him to play. San Diego’s RB missed Friday’s practice and hasn’t been able to participate all week. The Chargers listed Tomlinson as doubtful for the divisional-round game in Pittsburgh.

Cards’ Boldin back at practice, questionable to play

Better news for the Cardinals: WR Anquan Boldin returned to practice Friday and is listed as questionable to play in Saturday’s NFC Divisional Playoff Game against the Panthers.

Westbrook returns to practice for Eagles

No need to worry, Eagles fans. RB Brian Westbrook looks like he’ll be just fine for Sunday’s NFC Divisional Playoff Game against the Giants.

Titans will face Ravens without C Mawae, DE Ball

Despite having an extra week to rest thanks to the bye, the Titans ruled C Kevin Mawae (elbow) and DE Dave Ball (back) out for Saturday’s AFC Divisional Playoff Game against the Ravens.
