Where Sunday’s contenders stand for 2009 cap

Pennsylvania’s NFL teams –- the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles — are two of the league’s top-run organizations. Both teams have positioned themselves incredibly well for the 2009 season in relation to the salary cap.

Here’s a look at the teams in Sunday’s games and where they stand for next season.

Sproles shows he can handle the load

Chargers RB Darren Sproles has at least 10 carries in a game just three times in his NFL career. But in each of those games, Sproles had over 100 rushing yards.

Chargers face conundrum concerning LT

As unthinkable as the idea is, it must be debated.

The Chargers will have to discuss, if they haven’t already, whether it’s worth bringing back RB LaDainian Tomlinson with his contract structured the way that it is.

Manning, Samuel see enough of each other

Few defensive players know Giants QB Eli Manning any better than Eagles CB Asante Samuel.

When Samuel faces Manning today, it will be the fifth time in the past 379 days that the two have squared off. That’s five times in their past 22 games.

Quarterback Class of 2004 proving itself

Nearly five years later, the Quarterback Class of 2004 can start to be talked about in the same conversation with the trumpeted Quarterback Class of 1983.

Is an all-wild-card Super Bowl coming?

Five wild-card teams have reached the past 11 Super Bowls. Yet here’s the key point to remember: Never have two wild-card teams reached the final Sunday of the season. This season, there’s a chance.

Cable wants the Raiders, but will they pick him?

Following extensive talks with Raiders owner Al Davis, Tom Cable has made an even more convincing case as to why the interim tag should be dropped from his head-coach title.

Ryan can only interview, but Schwartz can accept

In the first game of Saturday’s AFC Divisional Playoffs, the Ravens and Lions won, and the Titans, Rams and Jets lost.

Now that the Ravens have advanced, the Rams and Jets must wait to hire Baltimore defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.

But with the Titans knocked out of the playoffs, the Lions now are free to talk again with Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz if they so chose.

Lions might make a front-office hire

While the Lions have launched an extensive head-coaching search, they also have quietly explored hiring another front-office man to match with chief operating officer Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew.

Titans’ big decision: Collins or Young at QB in 2009?

Soon enough, and sooner than they wanted, the Titans will have an interesting quarterback decision to make.

Another Eagles assistant could fly to a bigger job

Before he became the Ravens’ head coach, ,strong>John Harbaugh was the Eagles’ defensive backs and special teams coach.

Now the Eagles’ current special-teams coach, Sean McDermott, is a leading candidate to become the Packers’ next defensive coordinator.

Cardinals have just about wrapped it up

Well. … We’re on “fans leaving the stadium” watch.

Player correspondent Keith Brooking and I are marveling at the Arizona defense. They’re playing as complete a game as they could have hoped for.

Fitzgerald playing well; Cardinals force turnovers

Player correspondent Keith Brooking is really impressed with the Cardinals’ strategy to move Larry Fitzgerald around before the snap. If you leave him out wide (where he usual lines up when Anquan Boldin plays), then it’s easier to roll a coverage to him or straight up double him.

Cardinals keeping Panthers off balance

It’s the end of the first quarter, and player correspondent Keith Brooking believes the Cardinals are doing a great job of moving Larry Fitzgerald around before the snap (something Anquan Boldin usually would do more of when healthy and in the game).

George: Ravens’ defense imposes its will

The Baltimore Ravens reminded the Tennessee Titans on Saturday that the best defense flattens ball-carriers. That the best one pops balls loose all over the field.

That’s what the Ravens did in winning 13-10 at LP Field and earning a spot in the AFC Championship Game.
