Hot seat could be even hotter for coaches in 2009

The coaching class of 2010 is shaping up to be like the quarterback class of 1983.

Next season, the three coaches expected to be available for hire at anytime are former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, former Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren and former Steelers coach Bill Cowher. Two others, Tony Dungy and Bill Parcells, also could be added to the collection.

With Shanahan, Holmgren and Cowher each free to be hired at anytime, it means the hot seat will be even hotter for embattled coaches next season. The NFL owner who’s first to fire his head coach will have the first opportunity to sit down and hire someone from the coaching class of 2010.

So Black Monday could happen during the season for the first time. Calls for coaches’ jobs will intensify because of the coaches who are available. Next season is shaping up as an extraordinarily tough one for coaches on the hot seat.
