Spagnuolo focused on Giants, not future gigs

In this space on Tuesday, it was pointed out that coaches on teams that have clinched byes — the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans — will be allowed to interview for head coaching jobs next week.
Yet asked Wednesday if he would interview next week for any head coaching jobs, Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said that is the last thing he is thinking about.
“I have given it no thought, I will say that,” Spagnuolo said. “I will give it the thought or address it when it happens. I have too much respect for Coach Coughlin, John Mara, and the Tisch family to really even worry about it right now.”
Yet the New York media was not content with that answer (is it ever content with any answer?). So Spagnuolo was pressed to the point where he had no choice but to think about it.
“I have to figure out what I am going to buy my wife for Christmas. I have a lot of things going on right now,” he said. “Whenever it creeps up, I don’t entertain it, I just try to stay focused on what we are doing here.
“We will just let it play out. If the Good Lord presents me with an opportunity because we had a bye week, then we will take it from there. I am just grateful we are in the playoffs, that we have had the season we have had so far, and I would like to finish it right. To be honest with you, I am more focused on getting our defense right. I know all the guys would like to see us play a little bit better than we have the past three weeks.”
