Denver’s lead in the AFC West is as fragile as the Broncos defense.
And as much as San Diego has struggled this season, it still is simple to concoct a scenario for the Chargers to walk away with the AFC West title.
If Denver loses in New York against the Jets on Sunday, and the Chargers beat the Falcons at home on Sunday, the Broncos would hold a small one-game lead over San Diego.
But remember, the two teams’ final regular-season game is in San Diego. If the two teams held serve until then, all San Diego would have to do to win the West is beat Denver at home in the regular-season finale. At that point, the two teams would have split their games against each other this season, and the next tiebreaker used would be division record.
Right now, San Diego is 2-1 and Denver is 2-2, and a win in the regular-season finale would only enhance that.
So Denver is getting awfully close to must-win situations.
