After going through this week with only one quarterback on its 53-man roster, Denver finally has a backup quarterback for Jay Cutler.
The Broncos promoted quarterback Darrell Hackney from their practice squad to their active roster Saturday. To make room for Hackney, the Broncos waived offensive tackle Matt Murphy, who they signed only on Monday.
The 6-foot, 248-pound Hackney is a second-year player who spent the first eight weeks of the 2008 season on Denver’s practice squad. He was on the Broncos’ active roster for their final eight games of the 2007 campaign after beginning that season on their practice squad but has yet to appear in an NFL regular-season game.
