Falcons’ Baker has successful back surgery

The Falcons announced Thursday that rookie LT Sam Baker underwent a successful lower back discectomy.

“I’m happy to have the procedure behind me,” said Baker. “I look forward to getting back on the field with my teammates as soon as possible.”

Coach Mike Smith said on Wednesday it would not be known how much time Baker, the team’s first-round draft pick, would miss. A discectomy is the surgical removal of herniated disc material that presses on a nerve root or the spinal cord, according to WebMD.com.
