No. 44 at Syracuse meant one thing

As moviegoers await the opening of The Express — a film featuring the heroic story of Ernie Davis — in movie theaters on Friday, Sam Adams of the Rocky Mountain News recalls the lineage of players who wore the No. 44 at Syracuse.

Following the incomparable Jim Brown and Davis, Broncos legend Floyd Little wore No. 44 at Syracuse.

“The thing that came to mind is, I promised (Davis) I’d go to Syracuse,” Little told the Rocky Mountain News. “I could not break my promise — whether I was 100 percent sure, 50 percent sure, 75 percent. I told Ernie I would go. I called the coach (Ben Schwartzwalder) that day and said, ‘I’m coming to Syracuse.’ That’s the only thing I said. I hung up the phone.” Full story
