Lions promote RB Rudi Johnson

A report out of Detroit indicates that Rudi Johnson has moved ahead of rookie Kevin Smith on the Lions’ depth chart. Signs of this move began in Week 3, when Johnson saw the lion’s share of the carries against San Francisco.

Johnson, who is still a free agent in close to 30 percent of NFL.com leagues, should be added now. He’s not the same back who rushed for 1,300-plus yards and 12 touchdowns for three straight seasons in Cincinnati, but he’s fantasy relevant once again.

The move isn’t an indication that Smith should be released.

In fact, he should still see a role in the offense and could re-claim the top spot if Johnson falters or has recurring hamstring issues. But for now, Smith should now be considered more than a reserve in most formats.
