Robinson should cherish second chance

On the very same day the Seattle Seahawks gave wide receiver Koren Robinson another chance, the legal system took away former Giants wide receiver Mark Ingram.

It almost was as if it were one final warning for Robinson, the mercurial talent who has struggled to beat suspensions and sickness.

A judge in New York sentenced Ingram, a former standout, to more than seven years in prison for federal money laundering and bank fraud. In the most sobering stat of his wayward life, Ingram has racked up eight convictions over the past 23 years.

In a different way, Robinson can relate. He has been charged at least twice for DUI’s, another time for fleeing police, and has battled demons along with defensive backs.

Like Ingram, Robinson wasted money, talent and the time of others. But now Robinson is getting the chance Ingram only wishes he could.

Desperate for receivers, Seattle re-signed Robinson. It gave him a one-year contract and, more important, an opportunity. It is banking that Robinson has matured, learned and grown, just as anyone who has spent any time with him honestly believes.

Now, while Ingram has completed his out route, Robinson is getting to run the most significant comeback route of his career.

Let’s hope he earns his stripes instead of wearing the kind Ingram soon will.
