With Smith’s status up in air, 49ers sign Martin

Whether or not QB Alex Smith is able to play again this season is secondary. The 49ers are moving on and making other plans.

San Francisco signed QB Jamie Martin on Wednesday. It’s a move that makes some sense. Martin knows offensive coordinator Mike Martz’s system from the time they spent together in St. Louis. Martin can come in and serve as the 49ers’ No. 3 quarterback behind J.T. O’Sullivan and Shaun Hill. But the fact that the 49ers signed Martin indicates that Smith could be done for the season with a shoulder injury that is going to require surgery.
