Griese named starter for Bucs; Brooks in limbo

Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden has named QB Brian Griese the starter for Sunday’s home opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Gruden announced the switch following practice on Wednesday, but it remains to be seen how long the change holds. Gruden wants to give starter Jeff Garcia time to heal from his recent string of injuries, and didn’t name Griese the starter past this week. has more on the story.

The latest out of Tampa on the injury status of LB Derrick Brooks is also interesting. Brooks suffered a hamstring injury during the third quarter of Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Saints and did not return. Gruden said on Monday that Brooks, who was unavailable for comment, would be questionable to play this week. Brooks did speak to the media on Wednesday, offering more — or less — about his injury.

“Unfortunately for me, I’m under strict orders … I was told by my head coach not to really go into details about my situation and my injury,” said Brooks. “We’ll know on game day whether I’ll be ready to go or not. I’m under strict orders, more of a gag order. That’s all I’m able to discuss right now. We’ll see what happens on Sunday.”
