It’s difficult to predict how these stories go, but this one has the potential end of Alex Smith’s career in San Francisco written all over it.
Smith, according to 49ers coach Mike Nolan, injured his surgically repaired right shoulder late in the week and is not expected to play Sunday against Arizona. Smith now will be consulting with his shoulder surgeon in Birmingham, Ala.
Without Smith, Shaun Hill would be J.T. O’Sullivan’s backup for Sunday and the rest of the season. But with another shoulder injury, there would be even more questions hanging over Smith and his tenuous future in San Francisco.
