Saints will host season opener as scheduled

The New Orleans Saints will open the season as scheduled on Sunday, hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Louisiana Superdome at 1 p.m. ET. There was question as to whether the displaced Saints, who are practicing in Indianapolis this week, would be allowed to host the game after Hurricane Gustav hit near New Orleans on Monday.

“There were a number of critical issues that needed to be addressed before we could make this announcement,” said Saints owner Tom Benson in a statement. “We have been assured by Superdome officials that the stadium is ready to host our fans and our team for a sold out game this Sunday and we have been assured by our political leaders that we have their support in making this happen.”
