Breaking from the pattern of carrying three quarterbacks, the Giants have decided to carry two into the regular season. New York released quarterbacks Anthony Wright and Andre Woodson, leaving Eli Manning and David Carr as the only two quarterbacks on the Giants’ roster.

We here at NFL.com and NFL Network are ready for a monstrous day of cuts. Thirty-two teams cutting 22 players each — that’s essentially teams telling 704 players, “You’re fired!” There will be some high-profile names, some no-profile names, but lots of names, that’s for sure. And it already has started, though hardly with a bang.

A day after backup quarterback Matt Moore suffered a leg injury, the Carolina Panthers have acquired veteran Josh McCown from Miami for a future, undisclosed draft pick.

The backfield situation in Houston has become a bit more clear this week, as the team released Marcel Shipp and Darius Walker. That leaves Ahman Green, Chris Brown, Steve Slaton and Chris Taylor as the top options at the running back position.

The NFL has announced that Minnesota Vikings starting offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie has been suspended without pay for the team’s first four regular-season games of the 2008 season for violating the NFL Personal Conduct Policy. McKinnie, 28, was arrested after an incident outside of a Miami nightclub in February.

Nine-year veteran DE/LB Rosevelt Colvin was among 21 players released by the Houston Texans Friday in an attempt to reduce the roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players.

The New England Patriots released four players Friday: DT Steve Fifita, OL Jimmy Martin, CB Jeff Shoate and rookie TE Jonathan Stupar. Following today’s transactions, the Patriots report 71 players on their active roster. The NFL’s regular-season 53-man active roster limit goes into effect at 6 p.m. ET Saturday.

St. Louis Rams coach Scott Linehan announced Friday that the team has waived 10 players: WR Matt Caddell, S Jerome Carter, TE Nick Cleaver, CB Tanard Davis, CB Cortney Grixby, WR Marques Hagans, C Donovan Raiola, LB Marcus Riley, NT Henry Smith, NT Willie Williams.

The New Orleans Saints placed seventh-round draft pick WR Adrian Arrington (toe) on injured reserve Friday and released six other veterans as first steps in getting down to the NFL-mandated roster limit of 53 players by Saturday’s deadline.

The word on Carolina Panthers backup quarterback Matt Moore is the leg injury he suffered in Thursday night’s preseason finale is not serious. Moore doesn’t have any broken bones or damaged ligaments in his leg. A team spokesman said Friday that tests came back negative and Moore will be listed as day to day.

The Philadelphia Eagles released eight players on Friday, trimming their current roster to 67 players. The Eagles released WR Bam Childress, CB Therrian Fontenot, CB Nick Graham, WR Jamal Jones, RB Ryan Moats, S Marcus Paschal, OL Stefan Rodgers and LB Pago Tagofau. The final cut-down deadline is on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET, when all NFL teams must cut active rosters to 53 players.

Classic story from my Washington D.C. hotel this morning, where I spent the previous night covering the Jaguars’ win over the Redskins. I put in two wakeup calls — one for 3:30 a.m., the next for 3:35 a.m. First one came, and I got up and into the shower.

The rash of injuries to Cowboys receivers continues. The Cowboys lost wideout Sam Hurd with a sprained left ankle in the first quarter of Thursday’s 16-10 preseason win over the Vikings. Hurd, the Cowboys’ No. 3 receiver, left the locker room wearing a protective boot on his left foot after the game.
