Surprising service

Classic story from my Washington D.C. hotel this morning, where I spent the previous night covering the Jaguars’ win over the Redskins. I put in two wakeup calls — one for 3:30 a.m., the next for 3:35 a.m. First one came, and I got up and into the shower.

I’m soaking in the shower, dead to the world, when I hear a voice in my hotel room. Truly a voice. Suddenly, it’s getting closer and louder until I see an actual face — the face of a bald man who looked like John Malkovich — in the bathroom mirror.

“HEEEEYYYYYY!!!!!!,” I screamed loud enough to hopefully scare my intruder and alert the hotel. “HEEEEYYYYYY!!!!!!”

And the man spoke, embarrassingly. “Uh, Mr. Schefter, hotel security. We got alarmed when you didn’t pick up your second wakeup call.”

Exhale! Seriously. In all my hotel stays, I NEVER have had an in-person wakeup call. Still kind of creeping me out. Now on my way to the airport, and my heart still is pounding in my chest. Quite the wakeup call. Hope your wakeup today was more peaceful and pleasant.
