Orton looks impressive

Bears coach Lovie Smith took a calculated risk when he selected Kyle Orton as the team’s starting quarterback with two preseason games remaining. Orton, however, was up to the challenge as the new starting quarterback looked sharp against the 49ers.

Orton’s performance wasn’t surprising to Jerry Angelo, who spoke to the Chicago Tribune.

“This wasn’t surprising,” general manager Jerry Angelo said outside the Bears locker room. “Kyle’s ready. He has been around in this system and he has played.”

Orton was particularly impressive on a 21-yard touchdown pass to Rashied Davis in the first quarter. Orton finished the day by passing for 147 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Fantasy owners, however, are asked not to put too much stock in preseason numbers.

Certainly, Orton has been impressive in his first chance as a Bears starter but should not be considered anything more than a No. 2 backup at this point. Remember, according to Muhsin Muhammad, Chicago is where receivers go to die. Don’t let it infect your fantasy football team.
